April Delights & Paper Cranes

Sunshine & cherry blossoms in April – delightful!
According to an ancient Japanese legend, anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted their heart’s desire. A paper crane is also very symbolic of good luck in Asian cultures, especially when used to decorate weddings and given as gifts. Because of the time, understanding and patience required to hand craft each crane, there is a profound parallel with those very qualities that are necessary to sustain a happy marriage.
Origami cranes surround Philip & Holly’s portrait. And centerpieces of white callas, bear grass & blue water pearls adorned the guest tables with flare.

How appropriate it was then for a thousand origami cranes to be strung, scattered and ‘nested’ throughout the reception venue for the wedding of Holly & Philip on April 3rd. As I placed centerpieces about the room, I noted how much work and effort had gone into making all those birds. I learned later that Holly was their creator as she had chipped away at the task since the previous Summer. Centered behind the head table was an arch fashioned with strands and loops of them. In addition to their traditional charm, the blue & white cranes also personalized Holly & Philip’s theme perfectly.

‘April Delights’ – a pair with real class!
The simplicity and elegance of the bouquets and groom’s boutonniere were achieved with white callas alone. Aqua ribbon overlay and pearl pins embellished the bouquet bindings, and a few tear drop pearl pins also added a bit of special detail inside several callas in Holly’s bouquet and Philip’s bout. Holly provided one of her late Grandfather’s tie clips and asked me to attach it to her bouquet wrap somewhere that she could see it and feel that he was a part of her day despite his absence. The guys and gals in the wedding party were outfitted in classic black which was a great backdrop for the white and splashes of very trendy aqua blue featured throughout the day’s celebration.
Grandfather’s tie clip – a sentimental touch!

I wished so hard that the weather would improve for the couple that afternoon. But it was not meant to be – at least not prior to the ceremony. The bride was en route to the tiny heritage church of Clayburn Village in Abbotsford, and I had just finished my task at the ’Old School House’ (Hall) across the street where the reception was planned. While locking the doors, a blast of hail pelted me from every direction and the sky appeared ominously dark. And, oh my gosh, I’ll never forget the anxious look on Philip’s face as he stood in the open door of the church – partly due to pre-wedding nerves (I’m guessing), and concern over the impending storm that threatened to put a real damper on his bride’s arrival. But if the origami birds had anything at all to do with luck, the sun eventually appeared and dispelled all the clouds. Hurray for those little cranes!

The storm passed & they’re hitched!

Time to party! Love the black & white damask with aqua blue theme!
An origami crane ’perched’ at each place setting as a special memento for guests to take home.

Congratulations & best wishes to the love birds, Philip & Holly!

It was such a pleasure working with Holly to help her achieve the perfect flowers she wanted for her dreamed-of-day. Her choice of callas was elegant, simple & one of my favorites to design with. Also, I want to thank Holly for the opportunity & for ALL the kind recommendations she’s been making to B&B. I’ve continued to serve more brides as a result & it’s appreciated beyond words!
